Dr. Alan Grant, DMD
Dr. Grant grew up in East Kildonan, he attended St. Alphonsus Elementary school, went on to Munroe Jr. High, and graduated from River East Collegiate in 1984. Prior to his acceptance into Dentistry Dr. Grant attended the University of Winnipeg double majoring in Chemistry and Psychology. He accomplished his childhood dream of backpacking through Europe, just prior to his acceptance into Dentistry in 1990. One year after graduation from Dental School he met the love of his life Maggie Lee-Grant, they were married in 1997, had a baby Philip, who is now 18 years old.
Dr. Grant graduated from the University of Manitoba in 1994. He was an active participant in student politics, in his final year he was the President of the Manitoba Dental Student’s Association or “Senior Stick”. Dr. Grant graduated with several awards, including the Mary Jane Ego Scholarship for excellence in Oral Surgery, the Oral Maxillo-facial Award for proficiency in Oral Surgery, and the Pain and Anxiety Award for making his patients feel comfortable.
After graduation, Dr. Grant set up his first practice in 1995 in Elie, Manitoba. He practiced part-time in Elie Manitoba for 6 years. During this time Dr. Grant was also a standing offer agreement contract dentist for Health Canada, practicing dentistry in Aboriginal communities in Northern Manitoba. Dr. Grant moved in 2001 to Pine Falls, Manitoba and started his second clinic, due to the closure of the Isoboard plant in Elie he closed the Elie office, and made Pine Falls his home. Shortly after relocating to Pine Falls, Dr. Grant’s wife Maggie became completely Blind, his son Philip was only 1 year old at the time. Dr. Grant worked hard to accommodate a rural practice as well as take care of his disabled wife and new born son, these were very difficult years for him and his family.
In 2010, Dr. Grant purchased the dental practice of Dr. Peter May. Dr. May was a Regent Avenue Dentist for over 30 years. Dr. May’s love of dentistry was rivaled only by his love of golf. He fully retired in the fall of 2010, purchased a winter home in Las Vegas and began his real career of Golf full time. We have missed Dr. May, but wish him all the best as he enjoys his well deserved retirement.
As of Nov 2012, we have relocated our office to Kildonan Place Mall. We have upgraded our office to digital X-rays to minimize patient exposure to radiation, we have moved to a chartless digital charting system to reduce our dependence on paper and paper waste. We have improved our sterilization system to reduce paper and plastic waste by using re-usable cassettes instead of sterilization bags. We have moved to a dry-vac system to prevent water waste. We are encouraging our dental collegues to the same challenge of providing quality dentistry in an Eco-Friendly way. In 2012, we purchased a Cerec (Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramic) Machine, and started fabricating our own crowns and bridges, in most cases a crown can be made and cemented at the same appointment. No more temporary crowns falling off!
In 2014, Dr. Grant went off to the Dominican Republic, for an 8 day residency in Oral Implantology. During the course, Dr. Grant placed approximately 40 implants, currently Dr. Grant is completing the requirements for his fellowship in the International Congress of Oral Implantology.
In 2016 we have invested in our office once again with a Dual Wavelength Dental Laser, called the Fotona Lightwalker ATS. This Erbium laser is one of the fastest and most efficient lasers at cutting tooth structure, and 50% of patients do not need dental anesthetic (freezing) to accomplish their routine fillings. This laser is also has the ideal wavelength for periodontal/soft tissue procedures, Wave Optimized Periodontal Therapy, used for photo-disinfection of periodontal pockets. The periodontal applications are a definite game changer for dentistry. The laser also allows us to do the Fotona signature Nightlase procedure, where we gently (non ablative) laser the soft tissue of the soft palate and oropharynx to tighten the soft tissues which act to lift the soft palate and reduce snoring symptoms up to 70%!
